It is only a comparatively short time since the name Nambour was synonymous with the entire area now generally known as the Sunshine Coast of Queensland.

Although not the first area settled when the Europeans found their way North from Moreton Bay (Brisbane) it was Nambour which quickly became the settlement of significance and the centre of the agricultural and commercial activities within the catchments of the Maroochy and Mooloolah Rivers.

While the recent 30 years or so have seen major development within the region and particularly along what is now commonly referred to as "the beach strip," it has been Nambour and the surrounding district which has under-written the development and maintained a sound economic base during these formative years.

The stability was the result of a diverse agricultural sector and the subsequent development of secondary industries based on those particular industries. The Moreton Sugar Mill and the Milk factory were but two of these important attainments.

The current Nambour District Chamber of Commerce executive recognises that the dramatic changes in the socio/economic mix within the region over the past 30 years, together with the massive re-positioning of the region's population base to the coastal strip, has provided those areas with some financial clout, and certainly the right to claim that tourism provides a high percentage of the community wealth in the total region.

This is not to say however that Nambour has not been quietly undergoing a restructure of its own. No longer reliant solely on agricultural pursuits, and certainly not holding any claim to having tourist attracting assets in any way comparable to the sun and sand on those lovely beaches just 20 minutes or so from the centre of town, Nambour has acquired some very worthwhile attributes that continue to support its stability and strength.

With two very large and modern hospitals and an extensive array of medical facilities and support infrastructure, Nambour has become the envy of many larger cities both in Queensland and the Southern states. When this is paralleled with an education sector catering for all levels from pre-school to TAFE, in total 21 institutions employing some 627 teachers and teacher's aides, it is easy to see where the shift in emphasis has been achieved.

In a commercial sense Nambour is achieving the stature of a very large shopping centre without the single roof, (3 major food chains, 9 banks and credit unions, Solicitors, Accountants, 6 national food chains alongside an extensive range of boutique establishments, employment and welfare organisations, 5 major motor traders and 3 Hotels and 6 motels that cater for those visitors who choose to stay overnight.)

Agriculture, Horticulture, Floriculture and more recently Aquaculture continue to contribute to the employment and incomes of locals and to provide an alternative factor through providing eco and environmental tourism.

All this in an environment where the confidence of business operators is rising due to recent announcements of substantial redevelopments within the CBD and adjacent areas, and the lack of traffic problems compared to the gridlocks experienced by others.

Real estate values continue their upward trend with indications of some serious housing developments in the pipeline. Nambour has ready access to North and South by rail and road. All major Sunshine Coast tourist areas are within 30 minutes drive, and to quote a local business leader: "Nambour is the Green behind the Gold" or as the Chamber promotional slogan says it: Nambour - Living heart of the Sunshine Coast!
